The light wood set

These two pieces belong to a family friend who wanted me to help her update the appearance of each piece, rather than purchasing new pieces of furniture for her home. The side board was the first one I did and I just simply sanded off the existing finish and painted the piece black. I "shabbed" the piece to give it more character and added a protective coat that gives it the glossy finish. I opted for simple brushed nickel hardware to replace the existing pulls and knobs.

The next piece is used as a dresser for my family friend's son. This piece was refinished to go with all new decor in his bedroom (I will post more pictures of that room later on). The colors I chose for his room were a rich chocolate brown, a light white-gray linen, and a deep red. I did not want to paint the piece black because it would just disappear in the room, so I chose to paint it in the deep red. This piece consists of many layers of painting and distressing. I began by painting many layers of a flat black paint after taking time to remove the existing finish, and then I painted on the deep red color so that the black paint underneath was no longer visible. I then sanded the piece to distress certain areas to have the wood and black paint show through the red. My last step in refinishing this piece was going over the entire piece with a dry rag dabbed in ebony wood stain. This helped make the red not as intense and provided a protective coating. I chose more contemporary hardware for this piece because it is for a college-aged young man and it updates the piece to more current furniture.
