Red Hot

I love painting furniture, but I think I love to fix up old chairs even more. You have the freedom to pick a great paint color in addition to some really fun and interesting fabric. I chose these chairs for the geometric lattice work on the back of the chair, and I was also able to get a great deal for the pair. (I recommend spending no more than $20 for a chair that you plan on fixing up, unless it has really high quality wood and craftsmanship.)

For the chair frame, I began by sanding off the existing finish and then painting a few heavy coats of flat black paint. Next I painted on about three or four coats of the red paint. I then distressed the chair on the edges and detailed areas to expose the black painted layers and the wood. As a final touch I rubbed a little black ebony stain on some areas.

The existing seat cushions were in terrible shape, but it was part of the reason why I got such a great deal on the pair of chairs. Before I could reupholster, I had to remove the existing batting and put new foam and batting on the seat. I then upholstered the new fabric on simply with a hand staple gun.

These chairs are bold, fun, and definitely one of a kind. The color and fabric combinations are endless, but I chose these in particular to fit in a nook next to the bedroom with the red piece I painted.
